International Cooperation

The First Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical University has been dedicated to actively promoting international academic and personnel exchanges and collaborations. It has established cooperative partnerships with institutions in countries and regions including France, Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom and the United States, etc. The hospital has successfully organized a series of international academic conferences, including 11 sessions of the Sino-France International Breast Cancer Forum, 7 sessions of the International Uveitis Symposium, 6 sessions of the Chongqing International Forum in Gastrointestinal Surgery, and 5 sessions of the International Seminar on Mood Disorders And Suicide Study in Chongqing. Additionally, 23 overseas honorary and adjunct professors have been appointed. Over the past decade, the hospital has hosted over 1,000 visits by international scholars and delegations, while sending more than 250 staff members abroad for academic exchanges, training, and research programs. It has enrolled 36 international postgraduate students from 21 countries, including Nepal, Palestine, Indonesia, and Canada, and has admitted 29 medical students from the United States, Italy, Belgium, and the United Kingdom for clinical rotations.

The hospital has fostered Sino-French medical exchanges for over three decades. Since 1994, it has signed cooperation agreements with multiple French medical schools and hospitals, notably renewing partnerships several times with the University of Strasbourg’s Faculty of Medicine and the University Hospital, as well as with the with University of Toulouse III-Paul Sabatier and its University Hospital. In 2017, with the support of Chongqing Municipal Health Commission and the French Embassy in China, the Chongqing Sino-French Emergency and Disaster Medicine Cooperation Center was established to enhance collaboration in emergency, critical care, and intensive care medicine.
To date, the Sino-French medical exchange program has facilitated training and clinical rotations in France for 166 physicians, faculty members, and administrators. It has also enabled 152 students from Chongqing Medical University to participate in clinical internships and laboratory research in France. The hospital has welcomed six French ambassadors to China, hosted 171 French experts and professors for academic exchanges in Chongqing, and received 81 French medical students for summer clinical rotations. Furthermore, 23 Sino-French medical academic conferences have been successfully held, including 11 sessions of the Sino-French Breast Cancer Symposium and 15 sessions of the Sino-French Workshop of Breast Oncoplastic and Reconstructive Surgery, both of which have become renowned events in the field of breast cancer in China.

Since 2017, the hospital has actively strengthened Sino-European exchanges, maintaining frequent exchanges with Germany and Italy. In 2017, it signed a strategic cooperation framework agreement with the Thoraxklinik Heidelberg in Germany. In 2023, it facilitated the signing of a cooperation agreement between Chongqing Medical University and the University of Florence in Italy. Since 2021, the hospital has hosted three sessions of the SINO-Europe (Chongqing) International Respiratory Forum and two advanced training programs for young and middle-aged physicians.

Actively responding to the "Belt and Road" Initiative, the hospital has organized four international training programs, notably the “Belt and Road” International Clinical Training Course on Minimally Invasive Hip and Knee Replacement and the training project for the doctors of Department of Anesthesiology from the Belt and Road countries. These programs have effectively advanced the joint training of medical talents and the innovation and development of medical technologies in the countries jointly building the "Belt and Road".

The hospital has been undertaking medical aid missions to Papua New Guinea (PNG) since 2002, and took the lead in forming a Chinese medical team to provide aid to Barbados in 2014. In total, it has dispatched 7 batches of 10 medical professionals to Papua New Guinea and 7 batches of 28 medical professionals to Barbados. With exceptional medical expertise and noble ethics, the members of these Chinese medical teams have served the people of recipient countries wholeheartedly, contributing to the building of a global community of health for all. Their efforts have earned widespread acclaim and recognition. Dr. Zhang Jingsong, leader of the 7th Chinese medical team to Papua New Guinea, was featured on PNG stamps, with a personal inscription from the Secretary-General of PNG's Ministry of Health. Three team members were awarded the honorary title of "National Advanced Individual in Foreign Aid Medical Work", one was honored as " National Most Beautiful Foreign Aid Doctor ", and the hospital itself has been distinguished as the “National Advanced Collective in Foreign Medical Aid Work”.

Led by Professor XIAO Mingchao and Professor ZHAO Qinghua from the First Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical University, the patient safety team has dedicated 23 years to advancing the field of patient safety. With a focus on critical elements encompassing healthcare service delivery, academic instruction, scientific research, community engagement, and international collaboration, the team has spearheaded and catalyzed the progression of patient safety in China, offering “Chinese experience” and contributing “Chinese wisdom” to global initiatives in this vital area.
