Introduction

The First Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical University was founded in 1957 by a group of experts who relocated from the former Shanghai First Medical College (now the Shanghai Medical College of Fudan University). It is a Class A tertiary comprehensive teaching hospital integrating medical care, teaching, scientific research, disease prevention, health care, and international medical services. Renowned throughout Southwest China for its comprehensive disciplines, strong technical capabilities, distinctive specialties, and outstanding service capacity, the hospital currently operates across multiple campuses, including Yuanjiagang, Jingwei, Jinshan, Qinggang, and the Great Hall campuses. Under a strategy of homogenized management and differentiated development, it has formed a distinctive and complementary development model. In the national performance assessment of tertiary public hospitals, it has ranked first in Chongqing for six consecutive years and firmly holds a position among the leading hospitals in China.

Outstanding Service Capacity

The hospital operates 50 clinical, technical, and platform departments and has 4,616 approved beds. In 2024, it recorded 4.125 million outpatient and emergency visits, 208,700 discharges, and 96,000 surgeries. Patients come from across China and from countries such as the United States, Australia, and Japan. Actively engaged in medical cooperation and assistance, the hospital currently supports a telemedicine network with 158 partner institutions, covering more than 90% of Chongqing's districts and counties.

Exquisite Medical Technology

The hospital undertakes complex and critical care, emergency rescue, medical security, and international medical missions. It has developed leading-edge technologies in minimally invasive surgery, interventional therapy, Da Vinci robotic surgery, and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). Leveraging its comprehensive medical strengths, it promotes multidisciplinary team (MDT) care and Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) strategies. The hospital has 23 national clinical key specialties (including Obstetrics, Laboratory Medicine, Critical Care Medicine, Specialized Nursing, Endocrinology, Cardiology, Thoracic Surgery, Neurosurgery, Anesthesiology, Neurology, General Surgery, Ophthalmology, Pulmonology, Otolaryngology, Oncology, Medical Imaging, Geriatrics, Orthopedics, Psychiatry, Hematology, Clinical Pharmacy, Urology, and Gastroenterology), 1 national key TCM specialty (Traditional Chinese Geriatrics), 1 project under the National Program for Improving Diagnosis and Treatment of Complex Diseases (Oncology), 37 Chongqing Municipal Clinical Diagnosis and Treatment Centers, and 22 Municipal Medical Quality Control Centers. Each discipline has established its unique strengths, placing the hospital at the forefront of medical care in China. It is actively applying to become a National Medical Center and a National Regional Medical Center.

Advanced Medical Equipment

The hospital is equipped with nearly ¥2.5 billion worth of advanced medical instruments, including the fourth-generation Da Vinci surgical robot, orthopedic surgical robots, PET-MRI, PET-CT, SPECT-CT, MRI, CT, LA, DSA, cyclotrons, and more, placing its medical technology at a leading level nationwide.

Distinguished Medical Talent

The hospital boasts a large team of renowned experts with high academic achievements and extensive clinical experience, including national-level leading and young talents, outstanding young and middle-aged experts in health care, and Nightingale Medal recipients. There are 361 senior-level experts, 547 associate senior experts, 152 doctoral supervisors, and 534 master’s supervisors. The hospital has received 26 national-level talent recognitions and 24 government special allowance recipients. Currently, hospital staff hold 542 academic positions in national-level societies and associations, including 15 serving as vice chairpersons or above in secondary branches of the Chinese Medical Association and Chinese Medical Doctor Association; 80 hold chair or vice chair positions in Chongqing Medical Association, and 59 serve as presidents or vice presidents of Chongqing Medical Doctor Association.

Significant Achievements in Science and Education

The hospital has a postdoctoral research station in Clinical Medicine, 7 first-level doctoral degree programs, and 10 master’s degree programs. It has established 3 national key disciplines (Infectious Diseases under Internal Medicine, Neurology, and Clinical Laboratory Diagnostics), 1 national key TCM discipline (Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Clinical Medicine), and 7 first-level key disciplines in Chongqing universities. It was among the first institutions named a “National Clinical Teaching and Training Demonstration Center.” The hospital has been approved for several key scientific and innovation platforms, including the National Health Commission Key Laboratory for Functional Brain Disease Diagnosis and Treatment, the “111 Project” Base for Mother-Fetus Medicine, the Ministry of Education International Joint Laboratory for Reproductive and Developmental Medicine (Mother-Fetus Medicine), the Sichuan-Chongqing Joint Key Laboratory for Metabolic Vascular Diseases, and the Chongqing Translational Medicine Center. It publishes the Chinese Journal of Endocrine Surgery (in both Chinese and English), a core statistical source journal.

Over the past decade, the hospital has undertaken 2,198 vertical research projects at all levels, including major national science and technology projects, the National Key R&D Program, and key projects of the National Natural Science Foundation. It has won 2 Second Prizes of the National Science and Technology Progress Award, 1 National Innovation Excellence Award, 1 China Youth Science and Technology Innovation Award, and 77 provincial and ministerial-level awards including First Prizes from the Chinese Medical Science and Technology Award, the Ministry of Education’s Science and Technology Progress Award, and the Chongqing Science and Technology Outstanding Contribution Award.

In 2023, the hospital ranked 51st nationwide in the China Hospital Technology Influence Index. Three of its disciplines ranked in the national top 10, and five in the top 20. It also ranked 16th nationwide in SCI-indexed publications and in the number of outstanding scientific papers.

Numerous Honors and Awards

The hospital has received a series of national and municipal honors, including “Top 100 Hospitals in China,” “Advanced Collective of the National Health System,” “National Civilized Unit,” “Model Hospital in Hospital Culture,” and “Advanced Unit in Ideological and Political Work of the National Health System.” It has won the National Health Commission's awards for “Advanced Unit in the National Hospital Management Campaign (2005–2007),” the Gold Award in the “National Health System Nursing Skills Competition,” “Model Hospital for Improving Medical Services (2017),” and “Model Hospital for Quality Services.” Locally, it has been recognized as a “Chongqing Outstanding Grassroots Party Organization” and “Advanced Group in the Fight Against COVID-19 in Chongqing.”
