The Department of Ophthalmology at First Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical University is a comprehensive center integrating clinical care, research, and education. With more than 60 years of history, the department was founded by renowned ophthalmology experts from Shanghai Medical University and has since earned a distinguished reputation in Chongqing and across Southwest China. In 2008, the hospital appointed Professor YANG Peizeng, an internationally acclaimed ophthalmologist from Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center at Sun Yat-sen University - the top-ranked ophthalmology institution in China - as the department chair. Under his leadership, the department has emerged as a rising force in the field of ophthalmology nationwide, distinguished by its specialized expertise and commitment to innovation. The department is a National Clinical Key Specialty, a Chongqing Sub-center of the National Otolaryngology and Ophthalmology Clinical Medical Research Center, and Chongqing Sub-center of the National Ophthalmic Disease Clinical Medical Research Center. It serves as the deputy chairman unit of the Ophthalmology Branch of the Chinese Medical Association, a National Drug Clinical Trial Base for Ophthalmology, Chongqing Eye Disease Clinical Medical Research Center, Chongqing Key Laboratory of Ophthalmology and Chongqing Institute of Ophthalmology. Additionally, the department holds prestigious designations as the Chongqing Eye Medical Quality Control Center, the only ophthalmology department in Chongqing with a “Two Rivers Scholar” position, the chairman unit of Chongqing Eye Bank, Southwest Ophthalmology Alliance, Chongqing Children’s and Adolescent Myopia Prevention and Control Base. It also serves as the editor-in-chief unit for the 7th, 8th, and 9th Editions of the National Five-Year Ophthalmology Textbook Ophthalmology, the editor-in-chief unit for the English Textbook Essentials of Ophthalmology, the Chongqing Ophthalmology Specialist, Resident Physician Training Base, and the Chongqing Nursing Association Ophthalmology Specialist Nursing Training Base. For 10 consecutive years (2013-2022), the department has been nominated for in Fudan University’s “Best Specialty Reputation Ranking of Chinese Hospitals” for ophthalmology and has consistently ranked in the “Scientific and Technological Influence Rankings of Chinese Hospitals” by the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, achieving a best national ranking of 5th place.
Under the leadership of Professors YANG Peizeng and HU Ke, the department has set forth a service strategy of “Based in Chongqing, Extending to Southwest China,” implementing a “Huangshan strategy” to create a service philosophy of “people-oriented care, high aspirations, and pragmatic excellence”. To foster continuous innovation and talent cultivation, the department has established long-term collaborations with over 10 internationally renowned ophthalmology institutions, regularly sending medical and nursing staff for international and domestic exchanges and training. This initiative has greatly enhanced technological advancements and clinical capabilities. Currently, the department houses state-of-the-art ophthalmic diagnostic and therapeutic instruments and experimental equipment valued at over 100 million yuan, reaching the highest national standards in medical technology infrastructure. The department boasts a highly skilled and diverse team, comprising 10 senior-level experts, 14 associate senior professionals, 25 lecturers, 5 doctoral supervisors, and 13 master supervisors. It also includes 32 staff members with doctoral degrees, 7 members in the Ophthalmology Group of the Chinese Medical Association and 24 members in other national and international medical associations. Over the last decade, the department secured over 180 research projects, including National Natural Science Foundation key projects and international collaborative research initiatives, with total funding exceeding 100 million yuan. The department has published over 400 SCI-indexed papers in top-tier international journals such as Nature Genetics, Annals of The Rheumatic Diseases, Cell Molecular Immunology, Nature Communications, Advanced Science, and Ophthalmology. The department has established itself as the largest single-institution uveitis diagnosis and treatment center in the world, achieving global leadership in uveitis research and treatment. Patients come from all 31 provinces, municipalities, and autonomous regions of China, as well as over 10 countries, including the United States. The department has attained national recognition in the diagnosis and treatment of corneal diseases, cataracts, and vitreoretinal disorders, offering cutting-edge surgical and therapeutic solutions. In Chongqing, the department leads in pediatric and adolescent myopia prevention and control, implementing innovative strategies to combat the increasing prevalence of myopia among children. Additionally, it has pioneered advanced treatments in Chongqing for glaucoma, strabismus, amblyopia, ocular trauma, and lacrimal duct and orbital diseases, offering comprehensive ophthalmic care for a wide spectrum of conditions. The department has made significant contributions to China's tiered medical care system, pioneering the implementation of community-based ophthalmology services. By introducing appointment-based consultations in community hospitals, it has successfully expanded access to high-quality ophthalmic expertise, bringing specialized eye care closer to local communities.
