The Department of Otorhinolaryngology at First Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical University, as one of the earliest established specialty departments in Southwest China, was founded in 1956, partially established from the Eye & ENT Hospital of Shanghai Medical College (the present Medical College of Fudan University). With over 68 years of development, the department has evolved into a comprehensive leading center, renowned for its exceptional talent pool, strong technical capabilities, and state-of-the-art facilities, that integrates medical care, education, and research.
The department boasts a well-established talent team, consisting of 11 senior professionals, 11 associate senior professionals, 6 doctoral supervisors, 25 staff members with doctoral degrees. The team also includes 11 scholars with international study experience, 5 Chongqing’s High-End Young and Mid-Aged Medical Talents, and 1 jointly appointed professor from the Eye & ENT Hospital of Fudan University.
The department is equipped with cutting-edge medical facilities, including an emergency room, Hearing Center, Endoscopy Center, ear microscopy, the Chongqing Sleep Respiratory Disease Diagnosis and Treatment Center, and allergy testing laboratory. Additionally, it houses advanced technologies such as the GE ENT surgical navigation system, Beethoven intelligent CO2 laser surgery system, low-temperature plasma knife, ultrasound-based rhinitis treatment device (CZB-type HIFU for nasal surgeries), and multi-channel sleep breathing monitors. These state-of-the-art facilities support a wide range of diagnostic and surgical procedures for the specialty.
The department is recognized for its distinct sub-specialties, including otology, rhinology, laryngology, and head and neck surgery. Over the last 10 years, it has continuously tracked global developments in the field, implementing innovative technologies. As a result, it has a national-renowned center that provides cutting-edge diagnoses and treatments for ENT patiets.
Between 2018 and 2020, the department was successively nominated in the China Best Hospitals Best Specialist Reputation Ranking List (Fudan Edition), and from 2019 to 2022, and ranked #2 in Southwest China for four consecutive years. In the China Hospital Science and Technology Influence Evaluation Report (2020-2022), it ranked 18th, 22nd, and 17th, respectively, and was the top-ranked ENT department in Chongqing. Over the past 4 years, it has consistently been nominated in Fudan’s ranking of top specialties, securing a position among the best in the country.
The department holds the authority to grant doctoral and master’s degrees, and is recognized as a National Clinical Key Specialty. It is also the Chongqing branch of the National Otolaryngology Diseases Clinical Medical Research Center, the China Physician Association’s Endoscopic Nasal and Laryngeal Training Center, and a National Head and Neck Cancer Standardized Diagnosis and Treatment Base. The department also serves as a designated hospital for the National Cochlear Implant Rescue and Rehabilitation Project for Hearing-Impaired Children, the Chongqing ENT Clinical Medical Quality Control Center, Chongqing Clinical Medical Research Center for Otorhinolaryngological Diseases, Chongqing Sleep-Disordered Breathing Diagnosis and Treatment Center, Chongqing Hearing and Speech Disability Rehabilitation Technology Guidance Center, Chongqing Otorhinolaryngology and Head & Neck Surgery Specialist Nurse Training Base and China Nursing Association Otorhinolaryngology and Head & Neck Surgery Specialist Nurse Training Base (Outside Beijing).
Inspection Rooms
I. Endoscopy Center
The Endoscopy Center is equipped with advanced diagnostic tools, including ear microscopes, electronic nasal and throat endoscopes (including narrow band imaging), nasal endoscopy, stroboscopic laryngoscopy, and voice analysis systems. The center offers minimally invasive surgeries, tumor biopsies, post-surgical dressing changes, closed nasal bone fracture reduction, and tympanocentesis, among other procedures.
II. Allergen Testing Room
The allergen testing room is outfitted with leading domestic and international automated antibody detection systems (Thermo Phadia 250) enabling a wide range of tests for inhalant allergens and food allergens. The available tests include skin prick tests, specific IgE blood tests, nasal mucosal provocation tests, and nasal secretion cytology analysis, as well as nasal resistance, nasal reflex, and exhaled nitric oxide tests. With extensive experience in allergy-specific immunotherapy, the center has pioneered immunotherapy techniques in Chongqing, including routine subcutaneous, cluster, and sublingual immunotherapy, providing specialized and personalized treatments for allergic rhinitis and other allergy-related diseases. The center sees over 10,000 patients annually and is highly experienced in allergen diagnosis and immunotherapy.
III. Hearing Center
The Hearing Center is equipped with comprehensive tools for diagnostic and rehabilitation needs, including audiometers, tympanometers, Auditory Evoked Potential (AEP) instruments, hearing screening devices, and vestibular and balance function testing and rehabilitation instruments, Eustachian tube function analyzers, and advanced tinnitus diagnostic and treatment systems, providing comprehensive services for the diagnosis and rehabilitation of hearing and dizziness disorders.
The center conducts thorough audiological evaluations, including tympanometry, wideband tympanometry, pure-tone audiometry, sound field audiometry, speech audiometry, detailed tinnitus detection and personalized treatment, Eustachian tube function tests, Otoacoustic Emissions (OAE), Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR), Auditory Steady-state Response (ASSR), Cochlear Electrography (EcochG), Cochlear Microphonic (CM), and more. The center also offers extensive vestibular and balance function testing, with tests like video nystagmography, caloric tests, Vestibular Autorotation Tests (VAT), video Head Impulse Tests (vHIT), and Vestibular-evoked Myogenic Potentials (VEMP), as well as BPPV (Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo) repositioning treatment and personalized vestibular rehabilitation programs. For auditory implantation, the center provides pre-implantation evaluations, objective intraoperative monitoring, and postoperative tuning and effectiveness assessments. Additionally, for newborns, infants, and children, the center offers a full range of services including hearing screening, auditory diagnosis, and hearing rehabilitation.
